When Sue and Hunter Stovall bought their West End farm, there were no plans for it to become an award-winning creamery. After deciding they were interested in trying their hands at raising goats and making goat cheese, the pair started to convert their barn into a creamery and worked towards earning all necessary certifications to sell fresh (and delicious) goat cheese.

The Stovalls started with two goats, but their goat family has grown to include many more. The goats who live on the farm are milked twice a day by hand and are free to live a happy life while producing milk to make the many tasty cheeses that they sell.

Their award-winning Cheese Louise comes plain or seasoned. Seasoning changes, but they’ve offered Herbs de Provence, dill, cracked pepper, jalapeno, roasted garlic, and in-season fruits. They also sell a goat feta that is aged for five days in brine before it’s sold in blocks and crumbles.

Paradox Farm believes that the positive reviews for their cheeses are influenced by several factors. They’re a farmstead, so all the milk is produced on the farm and travels less than 12 feet from collection to production; their Nigerian Dwarf goats have a high butterfat content, which makes the cheese a little sweeter; and they milk by hand so the goats are less stressed and the milk is handled gently.

You can find Paradox Farm cheese at several places in Moore County, including Southern Whey, Nature’s Own, Moore County Farmers Market, and the Sandhills Farmers Market. If you’d prefer to try it with a meal, it’s served at Ashten’s, Rhett’s, and Chef Warren’s in Downtown Southern Pines.

They also occasionally have Farm Days where people can visit the farm to see behind-the-scenes action. Check their Facebook page for upcoming events and opportunities to see the goats (and sometimes their adorable babies) in person.
